The United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran are planning a war against the Iranian people. Both governments are currently bringing tensions to a boiling point in order to prepare the ground for the upcoming war. The United States is attempting to legitimize this war with two reasons: one, the fight against Iran’s nuclear projects and two, the necessity to “spread democracy” throughout the Middle East. The Islamic Republic of Iran’s only means to stay in power is by creating and maintaining crisis. Without an external enemy, the government cannot continue its oppressive and criminal practices against its own people. The US government uses imperialist wars to deflect from internal crises as well as to continue to build its empire. Without building this empire, the current political and economic ruling class would be unable to maintain its hold on power in the United States.
Since 1945, the US has helped create and maintain political Islam throughout the world. The United Kingdom played a central role in establishing political Islam during the late 19th century. US and UK foreign policy has consistently used political Islam (which they helped create) as a tool to defeat communism and nationalism in the Middle East and throughout the world. Although it has helped to fight communism, political Islam has now become threatening to these empire builders. The Islamic Republic of Iran is a clear example of this process in which political Islam has been used to crush communist and nationalist movements.
Clearly, Iran, as well as all other countries throughout the world, should become democratic and should not build nuclear weapons. However, these are not the real reasons behind US war efforts. The US is promoting a war against Iran in order to expand its political and economic power in the Middle East and to control the political Islam which (although supported/created by the US) is now becoming a threat to US interests.
The wars against the people of Iraq and Afghanistan are the latest examples of this political reality. The people of Iran are now next in line to become victims of this contradictory policy and imperialist ambition. The people of Iran must continue their own fight for democracy without any foreign interference or military intervention. The so-called “world war of cultures,” which George Bush recently declared, is merely a tactic used to legitimize imperial wars against the people and their own attempts to achieve freedom and democracy. True democracy, established through people’s liberation struggles, is not in the interest of the US ruling class.
We call on all people who believe in freedom and democracy to do everything in their power to prevent this war against the people of Iran!
