Dear Friends, Dear Comrades,
May 1, 2002 is the 15th anniversary of the 1987 mass rebellion in Kreuzberg! It will take place in the midst of an imperialist war of agression against Afghanistan and a general offensive of the rulers of the imperialist countries against the oppressed countries and the masses of people worldwide -- including here in Germany. At the same time it will take place in a situation in which millions of people around the world are daily carrying out resistance to this offensive and to exploitation and oppression in general including with revolutionary struggle. It is a hard truth, but a revolutionary truth: this system cannot be reformed, it must be overthrown through revolution from below!
That is what the Revolutionary May First Demonstration from Oranienplatz has stood for for the last 15 years. The multinational unity, internationalist spirit and militant determination of this demonstrations stands, more than any other May First action in Germany, for a revolutionary change of the existing conditions. In addition, up until today it has been possible to successfully defend this demonstration against every attempt to split, politically isolate, forbid or club it down Last year over 3000 people took part in the demonstration: workers, students, youth, retired people, children, unemployed and professionals, Antifas, feminists, communists, anarchists, Autonome -- the entire spectrum was represented. People of over 2 dozen different nationalities were counted. A great political success.
It is especially important to note that last year's demo made a decisive contribution to the general climate of resistance on May 1st and thereby gave important political support and strength to the magnificent historic battle against the police attack on revolutionary May 1st in Kreuzberg!
This year it is important to learn from and build off of this success. This demonstration has been so successful because in the past we have been able to unite around the key principles which have proven themselves in practice. First; that having Oranienplatz as the starting place for the demonstration has a very important political meaning; second, that the O-Platz demo has deep roots in the population in Kreuzberg/Neukِlln -- an entire generation has grown up with this demonstration and an important part of the population as a whole considers this demonstration to be "theirs"; third, that a main slogan with a clear revolutionary content is something that strengthens the overall message and political attraction of the demonstration -- it shows in practice that it is not only important to raise a clear revolutionary pole on May First, but also that it is possible to do so; and fourth, that the determination to march all the way to the planned site of the concluding rally is a prerequisite for being able to achieve that goal in the first place.
We believe that when we orient ourselves on these basic principles again this year that it will be possible to rasie the organizational and political level of the demonstration even further and thereby win even more people and forces to take part in the mobilization and the demo itself. The rulers have already stated publically that they intend this year to use even more cops as well as intensified political isolation tactics to put an end to this demonstration once and for all. This must meet with our determined and resolute resistance.
